We run XPSP3 Office 2007SP3 at our school. This will soon be upgraded to Win7 Office 2010 but not for a couple of months.

A student has created a Word document with Word 2010 Starter at home but it fails to open at school. If gives the error "The file xyz cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents". Clicking the 'Details' button gives no further info.

The 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint' is for users of Office 2000, XP & 2003. It essentially says that Office 2007 & 2010 are exactly the same and should therefore be able to open files created in either. In reality this appears not to be the case.

A Word document created in Word 2010 Professional can be opened in Word 2007SP3. So it appears to be an issue with Word 2010 Starter.

Anyone seen this before and know how to resolve it? Or is it just a 'feature' of the Starter versions that they can't be opened?

It's probably something to do with the document itself, rather than the use of Word's starter version.

Is Office Starter compatible with other Office suites?

Yes, Office Starter has the same file support as full Office 2010. You will be able to easily send documents back and forth from Office Starter to other people using the full versions of Word and Excel and vice versa. Starter provides full fidelity viewing, so people who are using Office Starter will still be able to see features that are not included in Office Starter.

Is Office Starter compatible with older versions of Office?

Yes, similar to other editions of Office 2010, Office Starter is compatible with older versions of Office.

I agree with macropod, it's more than likely something to do with the document itself.

Hope this helps.
