I want to swap out the 160 gb seagate drive in my external enclosure for a 500 gb seagate drive. How do I open the case? This one of the square shaped cases (grey with black ends) with rounded corners and a round rubber strip on the bottom. It can also be placed on end with a mount.

I pulled the rubber mount off and pried off one of the covers. There are 4 screws set in with what look like small allen heads. I could not find a metric or standard allen to fit it and it does not look like torx head? Has anyone tried to open one of these? Is there a simple trick to get in or does Seagate want to protect their unigue design.

It would help to have the model number of the case/drive. At this point, it is like asking how to remove the clutch from a Ford, without knowing what year/model/body you have.

Sorry, the model of the drive is:9w6044-670. I think there are several models that use this type of case through.

Is that what it says on the tag" "Model"? Google doesn't recognize that number. Are you actually looking at the "hold down" screws? It sounds more like the screws that hold the hard drive together. Do you know how hard drives are mounted in the computer case? External drives use the same hard drive mounting. With the size, I am assuming that this is a standard 3 1/2 PATA drive.

I am opening one right now would you like pictures/ You will need a 2.0 MM allen driver to open case.

Yes, I would like pictures if it is not too much trouble.
