Opening Ports

We are trying to put our email server on the same machine we use as our file server.

The install of the email server went fine but now I am stuck because I don't know how to open up the ports that the email server needs to operate.

Also, on a side note.. although we use a firewall and virus protection is it a good idea to put the email server on our main file server machine?

you create the rules in the firewall, depending on the sw you use!

are you talking about ports on the server or firewall ? depending on the number of users and mail load, mail servers often work hard scanning and processing mail. depending on the number of files shared off the server, then it may be working hard too. (or hardly working....)...

depending on the mail server, you may need to run different virus software. exhcange requires a differnent type of virus scanner than normal virus scanners.

We have the firewall ports open but the server seems to need ports opened also.

The idea of an "open" port is kind of a misnomer. Ports are open, it's just a socket that a service will bind to and start listening on.

Once you've installed exchange it will start listening on port 25 (or whatever you configured it to be) for incoming connections, then it will process those connections.

Telnet to port 25 on the machine and see what happens, if the connection opens you know exchange is listening on that port and that nothing is stopping any communications, if the sessions never opens then I would go to the exchange machine and type netstat -a and you should see an entry saying servername:SMTP and then over on the right LISTENING. If that's not there then you've messed something up in your exchange setup, if it is there then you have some kind of firewall keeping you from making the connection.

I agree with travis... You probably have a firewall issue here. Use the Telnet test that has already been descibed just to make sure...

Is e-mail working internally? Can you send e-mail between local users?
