Can anybody advice me as to how I can open a port on my linux server .

I have loaded on a communications server that listens on port 1100 how can i open port 1100 for incoming and port 5080 for outgoing

Thank You

If the server listens on these ports, they are open. Do you have a firewall on the server (and which one??).

the only firewall that would on the system is the firewall that was loaded with RH8.0 which I tried to disable by going to setup on the command prompt and setting the firewall(to no firewall) but it automaticly goes back to high security

Thanks

To disable the firewall, as root run this:

chkconfig --level 2345 2345 iptables off

I wouldn't do that if your machine is connected directly to the internet though.

The actual firewall rules are stored in /etc/syconfig/iptables

There are several other (much better IMHO) firewall tools out there than the one provided with redhat.

Search for iptables firewall.
