I'm running RH 7.1 (xinetd) and can't seem to telnet to port 110 for pop3 access? I think, maybe, I need to modify the xinetd.d/telnet file but not sure. Does anyone know?

Oh, I did want to mention that I already have the standard xinet.d/telnet file and it is enabled. I can already telnet into the box on the default telnet port...just not on port 110.

Check if pop3 is listening on port 110, by doing a 'netstat -na'. [Is pop3 really port 110?]

If so you should, among others, see a line similiar to:

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:110 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

Hi,

Make sure you turned on the pop3 services under xinetd - '/sbin/chkconfig ipop3 on' & optionally '/sbin/chkconfig pop3s on' (for ssl). Then restart xinetd -- '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart' .

Hi,

Almost forgot.. The other one with RH 7.1 that often catches people is the default firewall (unless you know its disabled). If you are not using iptables and the ipchains service is enabled then the RH firewall is probably active and you'd need to allow port 110 thru. Configure with the 'lokkit' command as root from an xterm.

Hum...no luck.

- I don't have the firewall enabled
- netstat -na does show tcp/LISTEN on port 110

When I try "telnet localhost 110" I get:

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to woodchuck.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

I sort of appears that I did connect, but then got disconnected. Does the help at all?

OK, all is well now. My bad! Turns out that only part of the qmail pop3d stuff was running...due to a typo in the pop3d service startup. Dog!

Thanks for all the help! I always learn something new from everyone during these situations.
