opening pop3/imap

I am unable to retrie my mails from outside the subnet when I try to connect to sendmail MTA. In hosts.allow I put in
pop3, xinetd, pop3s, popper: ALL
as I was not sure which one I had to open. That doesnt seem to work. How do I set up pop3 as well as imap so that anybody could retriev mails from whereever they are. Please note, I do not want to set up an open mail relay and I understand that setting up a pop3 such that mails could be retrieved from anywhere doesnt mean that mails could relayed through it as well.

Also will there be a problem if I set up pop3 as well as imap on the same sendmail server.
