Opening PM 6.5 and PM 7 files

I just bought PM 7 because I couldn't find a PC 6.5 version. I loaded PM 7 on my PC. Now when I open a 6.5 file by double clicking the 6.5 icon, it wants to open as a PM 7 file. I thought each version would recognize its creator and open in its respective version.

Unfortunately, even though you will have 2 separate copies of PM installed, 6.5 and 7.0... 7.0 becomes the default app for 6.0 and up files.

To "fix" this, go to My Computer, click View>Folder Options Click the File Types tab, scroll down to Pagemaker Publication.. hopefully the entries will not include both extensions on the list but will have a separate entry for PM65 and PM7 (I only have one version on my PC, this may not work, I have not tried it) Click EDIT, and where it says OPEN click that and browse to your PM65 folder, find the exe file and select that. If the Pagemaker Publication includes both file extensions.. then you are SOL... you will have to open PM6.5 manually.

I don't see how editing a P65 doc in PM7.0 would be a problem, you can always save as a P65 file in PM7.0, and the two apps are so similar that you can actually rename a PM7.0 doc as .p65 and open it in PM6.5 except in very rare cases where you used the few of the new features in PM7.0 to create the doc.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Thanks, I have been opening 6.5 first and then using File Open.

A couple of times I have forgotten to do this and opened the file from its 6.5 icon, and it opend correctly!

I think the problem is that whenb I first opened 7.0, I did not quit it, and the 6.5 files rolled over into 7.0.

Since that first day all my 6.5 files are behaving normally! Hurrah!
