Often when I open pdf files, a lot of the material is missing.
(I can of course open in Photoshop and make a jpg and use that) But would rather use the file correctly with it's objects in vector format.

Why do I get this message?

"The document --- contains PDF objects that have been reinterpreted. Expected a named object"

and how do I fix it???

thanks.

If you have Acrobat, you might try saving as EPS and opening in ILL.

Remember that the PDF might contain rasters that will have to be imported into ILL, causing some confusion.
