Opening Mac PC "FMP" file

Hi

I work on MS Access database and run Windows as OS. I just need to open a database which was developed in Filemaker Pro (dont knw the version) on a Mac PC. The filename is "TestDB.FMP". I downloaded the trial version of Filemaker Pro 6 for Windows and tried to open the file. The Software is not recognising the extension and when I opened it using All files it gave me all funny stuff.

Any suggestions?

Rename the extension to FM5 and see if it opens. If you are not sure of the version of FMP that was used - try FM3 that will automatically update it.

If you open FMP on the MAC and then explicitly open TestDB, the extension should not matter. That sounds like what you've done, so my guess is that the file is corrupted, not FMP, or not transferred properly to MAC.
I have a vague idea the .FMP was the original extension for FMP V1. Maybe V6 won't go back that far?

Paul, I believe he's trying to go Mac to Windows not Windows to Mac.

Filemaker Pro 6 should give you an alert if the file is pre-FMP5 and ask if you want to convert to current, saving a new copy in a FMP 5 - 6 compatible format.

I the correct extension for windows for a Filemaker Pro 5 or 6 dtabase is .fp5

The .fmp extention hasn't been used since filemaker 1 or 2, I think, which would mean that this is actually a Claris file.

Perhaps the quickest thing would be to bring this file to a Mac and try to open it there and save a delimited file for importing to Access.

If it is a Mac file and still won't open in Filemaker, then ResEdit can be used to look at the resource fork and see what the file really is.
