Opening Excel spreadsheet from URL

I am opening a spreadsheet using the following URL.

http://gbfrimw02/bip/reporting/Demand

Review Report.xls

However, because of the default 'file type' setting of 'Browse in same window' the spreadsheet does not open in true excel (I hope that makes sense).

I know I could change the 'file type' setting but that would mean close on a couple of thousand PC's to update manually as we do not allow scripting.

My question is, is there anything that can be added to the URL to forse it to open the spreadsheet in Excel rather than 'same window'?

This site should give you some helpful hints on the correct way to do this even though you can't actually "force" it to do anything.
