I am having trouble opening E-mails that have either Excel, Word or Powerpoint attachments.
If I double click on the attachment in the e-mail it opens the "Save As" Diologue box which is wanting to save the files as a "Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Macro-Enabled Workbook (*.xlsm) (The excel & file extension would cange if was a word doc)
This has only occured after a recent Automatic Update has been installed.
How can I return to the usual "double click" to open the attachment from within the e-mail?

Thanks

Colin

Are you sure there isn't more to this story?

For instance, the files that you are receiving - are they Office (Word, Excel) 2007 files? If so, it may be that Office and Windows knows you don't currently have a program for handling the Office 2007 formats, and as such, it knows you can't open them.

Just to see (if you've not done so already), perhaps you can download the Office compatibility pack or office viewers.

Just thought I'd add this: I wasn't trying to be rude/mean or anything like that in the way I started my last post. I was just thinking, and it just seems there's got to be more to the story - whether you realize it or not. Hopefully we'll be able to help you get to the bottom of the situation, regardless. [wink] So, accept my apologies if it came across in a condescending manner.

The Compatibility Pack does not work with Office 97. If you are receiving Word (or PowerPoint) 2007 format files you can try using the viewers for Word 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. I am not absolutely sure how these interact with Office 97 (or earlier) but I believe they should sit alongside it. AFAIK there is no equivalent for Excel, and you need at least Office 2000 to be able to use the compatibility pack.

I am interested in any details you can provide with regard to any recent update that may be the cause of a change in behaviour.

Enjoy,
Tony

I'm working (slowly) on my own website

I Have managed to sort out "Word" * Powerpoint" attachents.
This was done in "Control Panel" & "Folder Options" and by changing the programe that is used to open them in "File Types". However I can not find the right extension to to change in file types for Excel. I think that it has something to do with the "macros enabled" file extension.
This was the same on Word & Powerpont but I ghave changed it back to .doc
File types that I recieve for Excel are in .xls and the file type that is being used to attempt to open it is .xlsm
Thank you both for your help

I don't understand. Actually I don't understand much of what you have done.

What file types are you receiving?
What program is being used to open them?
What error messages are issued by what program?
And (just to confirm) you are using Outlook 97 for e-mail, aren't you?

Enjoy,
Tony
