Hi,

I i apologize in advance for any lame questions i ask, however i am totally new to GWise (and Novell systems for that matter) and have used Microsoft all my life (and as much as it pains me to say i generally get on very well with there whole office suite). Anyway i have recently changed jobs and the new company uses Novell and Groupwise 6.5 and it is baffling me a bit.

Anyway to my question:

When i recieve an e-mail with a document and double click it it immedeatly opens in the GWise viewer. This is excellent for documents that i don't have the program for and i can see its usefulness, but not when the file is a .xls (i am an analyst so get a lot of .xls sent to me). All i want is for when i double click on an Excel doc it to open in excel rather than the viewer. Is this possible?

Thanks for your help

Matt

On your client, Tools->Options->Documents. Select the Integrations tab and set it up from there.

Yeah,

I found that bit, but i couldn't work out what it was actually doing as i have been provided with no manual/training and couldn't find much help in the help files.

What does the integrations tab do?

Sorry for the lame questions but like i said this is the first time i have ever used groupwise.

Thanks

Matt

Actually I just tried the Integrations and it doesn't work the way I would expect...
Another option is to right-click the attachment and select Open. That way uses standard windows file associations to open attachments.

If you're sure that you want any and all attachments to execute when you double click them, you can turn off the GW viewer. Tools->options->Environment, Default Actions tab, under the File Attachments section select Open attachment. I strongly recommend that you NOT use this setting as it will enable any attached executable to run.

The document integrations are to have your files saved in GW. You don't want to do this, as you'll then have to specify "use application dialog" or something like that whenever you save a file.

Thanks Lgarner, that explains them a bit.

Lawnboy - That was exactly what i wanted. What now happens is when i recieve an attachment and single click on it it shows in the window, and when i double click it opens.

Now with executables, do you mean that now if i single click on them they will run (where as before they wouldn't) or that they'll only run if i double click. If the latter is true then i can't see this being any more of a risk than me right clicking and pressing open, as both are quite conscious acts, if the former (single click) is true then your right and i/anyone could easily single click by accident and therefore run an undesirable program (to put it mildly)?

Thnaks for your help

Matt

A quick test shows me that either single- or double- clicking a .exe attachment pops up a warning. Cool. IIRC, GW5.5 would run the file. This is a nice change I wasn't aware of.

I also tried a .bat attachment with the same results. I wonder if GW6.5 has the same behavior for all of the various scripts that can execute through a local interpreter.
