Opening Document Templates not from the New Document Button

Hi, I have a document library with a document template attached. It works ok. I have now been asked to open up the template to be able to add new files from a new link in the tabs at the top of the page. Is this possible? I tried to open from 'Modify Navigation', but I can't get it to create new word (w 2003) documents using my template.

Any help is appreciated.
