You can't do it. Any advice?

Once you've gone 9, baaabeee, you'll never go back...

I haven't seen anything that will allow you to convert a 9 to an 8.5, so if someone else is creating reports for you, make sure that they have 8.5 or below installed (CR 9 coexists with previous CR versions).

Because v9 is fully Unicode compliant there is no way that I know of that the report (.rpt) structure could be changed back to previous version.

As SV pointed out, make sure the development team and distribution are in sync with their versioning and make BACKUPS of your originals.
