Opening and saving word docs

Just created a basic site using PHP/MYSQL. I now have one problem I can't figure out. I want to have several word documents stored in a directory on the web server or wherever that I can browse to from the web page, open one , alter the text or whatever then re-save it back to that directory. Am I missing something simple here. I may not even need php here but I'm trying this forum first. Any help would appreciated.
