Opening and saving Sidekick 95 Write Files in Sidekick 98

Hi there everyone,

I've been using Sidekick 95 for many years now and am now using Windows XP Home.

The Sidekick Write Files can be opened in Sidekick 98 as "Memo Files", but if I make changes to them and try to save the changes in Sidekick 98, nothing happens, and Sidekick 98 won't close unless I say "No" to saving the changes.

Similarly, if I try to save the Write File under a different name (known again as "Memo File" in Sidekick 98) using Sidekick 98, a Save is effected, but when the resultant new Write or Memo file is opened, it is totally blank.

Any ideas as to why this is? I would like to change completely to Sidekick 98, but obviously I cannot with these phenomena occurring.

Dear FredTheOstrich,

One or more of the files, of which there are 3 when examined in Windows Explorer, (check out the FAQ pages at my website

could be Read Only.
This happens when you have written them to CD/DVD
Find them in whatever the directory you use and select the following which make up ONE memo file.

YOURNAME.SKNoteHeader
YOURNAME.SKWrite
YOURNAME.SKContent

Once you have highlighted each one of them right click and select properties and Untick the READ ONLY box.

I checked out these files, as advised, but they're not checked as "Read Only", as they are on my resident hard drive and used on a daily basis by my Sidekick 95 (for reading AND writing). All the time Sidekick 95 functions satisfactorily, there is no problem, but I just wondered why Sidekick 98 is unable to modify the files.

Since adding my ultimate post, I have discovered another quirk which you or other users may have experienced. When using either Sidekick 95 or 98 to conduct a Search in Write Files/Memos, I have discovered that if one of the latter is somewhat excessive in length, Sidekick fails to find the rquired search term in that document. If the lengthy document is split into more manageable sections, the problem is solved.

Sometimes I shock myself with my ability to overlook the obvious when reading posts!

I was thinking that you were now using Sidekick98 solely and had moved from Sidekick95.

You can only save Sidekick98 Memo files as Sidekick98 Memo files and not as Sidekick95 ones AFAIK.

You could install Sidekick98 on both Computers thereby making it possible to edit them in both....

Hehe Jim, don't worry about it - I miss seeing things ALL OF THE TIME these days!

As regards the Sidekick 95/98 interaction, then if, as you say, Sidekick 98 won't write files in the Sidekick 95 format, then that accounts for its inability to edit files opened from the Sidekick 95 folder. Is there a way to convert Sidekick 95 files to 98 versions, do you know? I ask this out of interest, just in case my older Sidekick 95 program ever decides it's not going to work on a new computer or operating system.
