I have Office 2000 and NT 4. Whenever I open a word document by double-clicking on the file in Explorer I get the message

"Do you want to revert to the saved '<filename>'?"

where <filename> is my file. Word displays the correct file whether I press Yes or No.

If I open files from within Word I do not get this message.

Any ideas why I get this message?

This happens because Word documents are registered incorrectly in the registry. Simplest way to fix is to run
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /unregserver
then
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /regserver
(assuming default installation directory)

I have amended the setting on my PC (I was messing about), and now whenever I open more than one Word or Excel File, the application re-opens instead of opening in the same window. What have I done? Lamaar75@hotmail.com

You didn't say which version of Word you are using.

Word 2000 will always open a new document in a new window, although only one instance of word will be running.

Word 97 will by default open each document in a separate window within the Word application window. If this is not happening, check that you don't have any startup switches set (/m, /n and /w are the relevant ones I think).

Can you have Word 97 and Word 2000 installed on the same PC and have Word 97 be the default?

You can have both installed at the same time (I do at the moment). Either can be the default. When opening a Word document the system will choose whichever version of Word was last used.

Hmm. One of my users has them both on his. He wants Word 97 to be the default, but Word 2000 always takes over. I get it so that Word 97 is the default, and then Word 2000 will go through the process that it goes through when you have it installed as install on first use. I don't understand why it does that. I didn't install it as install on first use.
