Hi,

Due to tight deadlines, I've had to give some non-IT staff the Enterprise Manager tool.

** When you right-click on a view name --> Open view--> return all rows......

is most of the work in retrieving the data performed on the client PC or on the server? **

(We have some multi-million row tables, so of course they sometimes get the 'Timeout occured' message.)

Thanks, John

Since the tables involved in the view need to be queried the work is mainly on the server. Past experiences have taught me to try and avoid this situation. At one company we had a user do Select Distinct union Select distinct, they unioned 480+ views together for a total row count in excess of 2 billion. Needless to say the server had issues and required intervention from the Data group.

thanks MDXer,

Yes, I've tried to tell them... but we dont have a large enough development staff to build the client side (VB etc) tools for them yet.

All you can do is document the potential hazzards and the cost of fixing problems. Especially if this is a production system. Make them aware that the users could have a negative impact.
