I have about 16 Borders or Frames that I made With Quark 3.3 and 4.1 Frame Editor (on my Macintosh IMac 400).
I can use any or all of these Frames in a 4.1 document and save as a 4.1 document.
Then I can open the 4.1 file in Quark 6.5 and when I get the message Use Xpress Preferences or Keep Project Settings, I choose Keep Project Settings.
The Frames are now in 6.5's preferences for that document only and I can use them as I wish throughout the new document.
My question is could you open either the Quark 4.1 or the 6.5 document on a PC and get the same results?

I would but I don't have a PC, that's why I'm asking here.

Marcus why is it confusing?
I know that I can open a Quark document on my IMac that was created on a PC if I have the right version, I just wanted to know if a PC is capable of opening a Quark document created on my IMac with Quark 6.5, and yes I have plans for transferring some documents like that.

The Quark Mac docs will open in the PC version as long as the Quarks versions are similar. If the recipient has Q5, you can save down to 5. Biggest problem is that so many still ahve 4 and you can't save back to 4 from 6X. The other problem is people nat have the same fonts. That's a biggie.

The recipient might experience some text wrap problems, so it's a good idea to also send a pdf so they know what it's supposed to look like.

jmgalvin, thanks for the reply
My only concern was that when I open a document in Quark 6.5 that I created in 4.1 that has a special border or frame that is not available in 6.5, I have the option to Keep Document Settings and then the special frame that I used will then be available in 6.5 and I can draw and use that frame throughout the document.
Guess my question was: if I send you this Quark document to open on your PC will you be able open it and choose Keep Document Settings and then be able to draw and use the frame?
Thanks IMacQuarker

Boy, that's a nasty problem. Frankly, I have no idea. The only way to check would be to send to a Quark PC user (I work in an all Mac enviroment).

You might try seeing if the border you imported from 4.1 shows up in your 6.5 dashes and stripes window. If not, you could change your dashes and stripes in 6.5 to match the one from 4.1 or create a new stripe?

I'm not sure if I am explaining this correctly, but from Quark version 3 up to 4.1 there were a lot of frames/borders such as Certificate, Deco, Ornate etc. and with the Frame Editor (which is not available in 6.5) you could create frames on your own.
However with my Version of 6.5 which I purchased 6.1 and did the free upgrade to 6.5, there are no frames/borders to choose from except the stripes and dashes.
Earlier someone was here in this forum also complaining about the lack of decent borders to use with Quark 6.5.
I explained to that user how to create a job in 4.1 using the frame/border of choice, then open that document in 6.5 and Keep Project Settings and that frame/border would be available in that 6.5 document.
I am wondering why Quark would discontinue all those borders in version 6.5 or am i missing a file or something?
Thanks

You might consider bringing all those fancy frames (around empty containers) into 6.5 and then create a library with them. That's about all I can think of.

As an Experiment, I created & saved a Q4.1 document. On one frame I used Deco Plain 8pt border. I then opened the Q4.1 doc in Indesign 3 (the app I vastly prefer). The Deco Plain frame did NOT import. Instead I got an 8 pt solid border.

On other boxes in the Q4 doc I put standard multi-line 6pt borders (from the frame style drop down). These DID import perfectly.

Based on that, I'd go back to my suggestion that you make an eps of the border and use as necessary. Personally I never used anything but lines. When I want a fancy border I create it in Illustrator, around an empty frame, make an eps and use that.
