Opening a folder from link

Is there a way to open a folder in explorer from an html link? I tried:

file:\\ipaddress\folder\folder\folder

but it does not seem to work....

Where is the file? on the client's pc or on your server?

This will work in IE, but probably not any other browser:

<a href="file:////host/folder/">open</a>
