I was planning a corporate (a pillar of American capitalism) upgrade from MS Access dBs to server side. The licencing costs for MS SQLServer were breath taking. (and I thought that Bill made his money on 'Age of Empires'). The big boys are nervous about open source. I've been playing around with MYSQL for a few days and it seems to be stable and flexible etc. What are the issues.

The dB's are not the core ERP, more like web data, surveys etc.

No issues at all.

It depends on what you want your database server to be able to do.

MySQL is fast, easy to use, stable, PERFECT, for any web application but not as powerful as other big stuff (Oracle, MSSQL) in terms of scripting, server features. It is getting there slowly but surely; just consider the effort that is put into its 'free' development.

I personally used mysql with no regret for as many as possible DBs.
Sometimes I needed to use MSSQL which I don't dislike at all, especially when it's not me paying for the license.

For web apps anyway I would not stop and think. MySQL is the one.

Just a suggestion:
for a production environment I would not run the Windoz version. My personal experience with win32 version is generally good although I found the *nix one faster and more reliable.
