I am running mandrake linux 8.2 but i have told that i have an open proxy using the "ho" protocol on port 8080 how can i fix this problem? i don't recall installing a proxy when i set up my server.

Start by doing "netstat -lnp | grep 8080" as root to see what process is running on the port.

ok i did netstat -lnp | grep 8080 as root
and nothing came back i know that squid is running by default i didn't set it up or confugure it. i guess it ws done by default. i have webmail, qmail and samba runing if i disable squid would it affect any of these programs. i suspect squid is the reason behind this problem

Default squid runs on port 3128
cat /etc/services | grep 8080 to check what's on the port.
Any chance Zope is running?

here is the out put from cat /etc/services | grep 8080. How would i know if this is an open proxy and how can i fix this? This is strange though because i didn't set up a proxy service and i do not have a static ip from my isp. i have a router and and i didn't set up port forwarding for 8080?

[root@delfy penguin]# cat /etc/services | grep 8080
webcache 8080/tcp # service
webcache 8080/udp # service
[root@delfy penguin]# locate zope
[root@delfy penguin]# locate Zope
[root@delfy penguin]#

i don't think i have Zope running i never installled anything like that by the way what kind of software is Zope?

The proxy probably does not have any access control so anyone could use it...
If you need to have Squid installed, look at the squid.conf file and enable some ACL's either on user id's, network ranges etc.
If you don't need Squid, just disable it...
