This feels like something I should already know but I dont.

How, exactly do I check which ports on a machine are open and how exactly do I close them?

I know how to block ports at my firewall (Mainly because the GUI is so warm and fuzzy) but I'm curious how I block them directly at a machine so users inside the firewall cant get at the ports of other machines on the network.

I do not know how to block port at the Workstation level. If you run a netstat -na (Windows 98)it should tell you what active connection are on the box. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.

what kind of machine you want to close ports on?

general things:

to get information about open ports on local machines, try a
port scanner. it'll tell you. (seek for it @ w3).

to close down ports under linux, you got 2 different tools,
depending on kernel version: ipchains (for 2.2.x) and
iptables (for 2.4.x). if you need to close linux machines,
try "man ipchains" or "man iptables".

under win2k, you can handle the useable ports under
"TCP/IP". there you can configure whether to accept or to
deny connections on specific ports.

last, i absolutely got no idea how to handle this with
win9x, possibly by installing (password protected) personal
firewalls... !?

hope, this helped, greetings from germany! (excuse my english! ;-) )
