Greetings;

I have backed up the exchange svr and it still keeps telling me I have 2-3 files that are corrupt an/or in use. Having said that I came across the above ITEM inside the BackUp EXEC program. Since I am new to this can someone plz tell me what the open option file wizard does?

Open File Option is a simple concept but not as simple to setup. It allows open files to be backed-up by creating a copy of them in memory, does some kind of pointer swap so the process(es) that are using them can continue to use them. Im not 100% sure of the finner details - but it's something like that. When you configure the OFO option via the Wizard, you have to make a few calculations and enter your results where applicable. Basically you have to reserve some memory for as many files that may be in use - so it can be a hog! Also, if you use this option with Remote Server (Agents) it get's even more complicated.
The results you get will vary - depending on your environemnt...
There are other ways to ensure that no open files are present during backup (ie Force logoff users / Stop Services / batch files copy / etc ...) the OFO option may work for you - but it never has been very good for me.
I have spent more time than I wanted to get our servers to backup the way we needed them to...so Good Luck!
