Open Lotus 1-2-3 files in Excel 2007 2

Can anyone tell me how to open a Lotus 1-2-3 file in Excel 2007? Previous versions of Office allowed this file type to be imported or opened.

Office Button; Excel Options; Advanced; Lotus Compatibility Settings; select Transition Formula Entry to convert the file to Excel.

That didn't work for me. It applies the Advanced settings to the workbook or worksheet that is currently open and then the setting defaults back to unchecked. When I open the wk4 file in Excel, it is unreadable. It doesn't convert to Excel.

I was under the impression that Excel Options, once selected need to be deselected. Are you sure there is something else funny not going on?

Those two particular settings in Excel Options, Advanced, are listed with the specific document chosen in the drop-down box just above the two checkboxes.

I know this isn't what you want to hear but Lotus 1-2-3 files are no longer supported as of Excel 2007.

From Microsoft Excel 2007 Help:

File formats that are not supported in Excel 2007
The following file formats are no longer supported in Office Excel 2007. You cannot open or save files in these file formats.

...
WK1, FMT, WK2, WK3, FM3, WK4 .wk1, .wk2, .wk3, .wk4, .wks Lotus 1-2-3 file formats (all versions)
...

If the files are really important then you could buy a copy of WordPerfect Office X4 Home/Student edition (about $125 USD), open the files in Quatro Pro (Lotus 1-2-3's successor), and save them as Excel 97-2003 files. You could then open those files using Excel 2007.

Other alternatives (free) might be to try either Open Office or Google Docs. I don't use either so I don't know if they are capable of converting Lotus 1-2-3 files to something that is Excel 2007 compatible.

OpenOffice does indeed support Lotus 1-2-3 .wk1 ... .wks file formats as per cmeagan656's suggestion, and can write MS Office compatible formats.

However, fancy features and especially macros may or may not be compatible in my experience.

I don't have any 1-2-3 files to test, but they are in the "files of type" list in OO Calc module.

This ia a data import workaround for a .WKS compatible spreadsheet. (Note that this was tested with data only, no formulas.)

Excel 2007: (have a new or empty workbook open)
Menu: Data
From Other Sources
From xml Data Import
Browse & select file (change Files of type to "All files")
Open
OK (Existing worksheet)

I do not know whether this works with other obsoleted file types.
