Hi Folks,

is there any possibility to make the default links the left navigation open in a new window?

My Sharepoint works in an IFrame of a different site. I don't want to change all the admin pages to fit the design of the "mothers page". That's why I want some of them open in a new window, which is less disturbing.

Another way is to create my own site navigation ... but I have no idea how to do that. Do you ? ;)

Any ideas appreciated!

There are a few ways you can do this... both are very... annoying. I'm assuming you mean the left, action bar side, correct?

If you're using the default "CategoryNavigationWebPart" to generate that, unfortunately that is a compiled .dll file. While you cannot modify that .dll file to open things in a new window, if compelled, you can use that .dll to create your own sps.dll file. You can find the procedure calls for the .dll using something like the Reflector ( Even as a developer, this was not the road I chose...

For those navigations that I needed to customize and open in a new window (for other reasons--some of our intranet applications capture the window and you can't "back" out of them), I just manually created new lists of links using FrontPage and formed them identical to how the .dll rendered them, then added the '_blank' target.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a good way to toggle the window targets.

The only other resource would be changing the default behavior of lists, news items, and other web parts that are clickable. That entails changing an XML file and, as a down side, becomes universal--everything opens in a new window. Information on that can be found at
Hope this helps and if you find a way or more information, please update the thread and share!

Cheers!
