Hi I am using a PC and want to OPEN my FTP ports for connection and file sharing with my friends only. How can I do that, I am using XP Pro.
I guess I need to change some settings in the control panel security center, but am not sure bout whihc ones.
Please help

1. Turn off windows firewall.

2. Grab a linksys or netgear router

3. Use the admin tool with the above router to forward port 23 to your PC

Example

WAN - 10.10.10.23

Your PC 1.2.3.4

Admin tool will have a port forwarding option, you will tell it to forward all traffic on 23 to 1.2.3.4

The normal FTP port is 21. If you want your friends to access your computer by FTP, you'll need to install an FTP server. XP Pro includes IIS which has an FTP component. However, I suggest that you find another way to share files. FTP services are often attacked and if not properly secured, could be exploited.

If you do use FTP, make sure the ID's and passwords are fairly secure. There will be lots of attacks from Asian and European IP's where there is not abuse e-mail addresses you can report to. And shutting down the rogue IP ranges is a PIA.
