I am not able to open my folders without the tree view. Is there a way to set preferences to just open the folder or to toggle between the previous options of "explore" vs "open"? I have been researching this and cannot find any reference to anything but the classic (tree) view.

(and it seems that search is not working on tek-tips right now, so if this has been answered, I apologize.)

Hi,
If I understand what you mean, after opening any folder, go to the 'Organize' option on the menu bar and click on Layout then deselect 'navigation pane'

Thank you very much. That is extremely logical. Unfortunately there is no option provided to deselect the navigation pane. Clicking on the Navigation Pane option under "layout" has no effect.

Hi,
Odd, when I do it the left-hand Navigation pane goes away.
(W7 64bit Home Premium)
Does the check mark next to it show ?

If you go to Folder Options and select Restore Defaults does that make any difference?

What is life like from Safe Mode?

What about a different user in Normal Mode?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista (or 7)

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista

Heya, linney.
Restored defaults to no avail. Checkdisk last week and not items shown (new drives, so it would not make sense.) Trying to find an option to open in classic view (have seen it) but it does not show.

More folder frustrations, double clicking on folders to open (so as to have several simultaneously visible) the explorer view expands to full screen. If trying to put 2 folders next to other, if they touch, the one being manipulated expands to full screen.

I know it is now "fixed" (like the ability to search for either content OR file name, a defect of previous Windows versions which has been graciously repaired), but the holy grail here would be to toggle to explorer when needed (remember when right clicking offered the option of opening OR exploring? How pesky was that?) Failing that, of choosing to use the explorer view from within the folder view only when necessary.

Have scoured the options I find. Wonder if there is something in W7 annoyances (but really, I am so happy I don't have to make those awful choices any more. Options are such a burden.)

Linney, that did it. With that done, the old explorer interface can be toggled on and off via organize. thank you both. That was driving me nuts.

Neither of you has any idea how to toggle between file and content search, then, do you? Aside from Google Desktop? (Some people are never satisfied, are they?)

This talks about something called Classic Shell. see if that is worth looking at.

Clicking on Folder-arrow in Win. Explorer moves folder to bottom??

If you display the Menu Bar, then under the View Menu there is a "Content" item. Whenever I search for various unnamed files containing relevant content, I just put the text (content???) in quotes and use the search box.

When searching for files I use this program as a matter of choice, if the files I am searching for are not Indexed.

I might be misunderstanding you here, to be truthful I must admit to being a bit confused by your post but I'm sure you know what you mean.

Many many thanks. I am not at the w7 desktop now (vista here) but I will give it a run when I am at the office on Monday and report back. Love Sourceforge. I'll also see what happens with your search solution. So far all I have found is the option of either searching for files alone or for files and content at the same time, which is far from satisfying.
Search My Files looks extremely promising. More thanks!

You're welcome, I'll leave you with some notes I have on using Windows Search.

"If you can't find a file, you can expand your search to include different locations. For example, if you're searching for a file in the Documents library, but you're not sure where the file is stored, you can search across all of your libraries or your entire computer. Here's how:

Click the Start button , and then click Documents.

In the search box at the top of the open window, start typing.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of search results. Under Search again in, do one of the following:

Click Libraries to search across every library.

Click Computer to search across your entire computer. (This way you can search for files that aren't indexed, such as system or program files, but remember that the search will be slower.)

Click Custom to search specific locations.

Click Internet to search online using your default web browser and your default search provider."

This might or might be useful.

Tips for finding files

Windows Search.

Thanks Linney, but that doesn't solve the problem. Here's the deal: I have 15000 + chef resumes in my folders. I also have a considerable number of cover letters, references, reviews, etc.
They are in Paradox, as well, but as you may know, blob files in Paradox cannot be searched.
Let's say I want to find someone who worked at Grammarcy Tavern. I enter "Grammarcy Tavern", so as not to get every tavern in the country. In return I get every document written about GT (title) and every document with GT in the content. It also takes forever, since Windows indexing seems sometimes on and sometimes off. In general I don't give a bat's butt who wrote it or when it was written..all of this gets in the way.
This discussion linked to yours expresses the possibilities fairly well,
I think that's what there is. Indexing I find is a sometimes thing, and finding things changed recently has also proved a problem.

There seems to be enough uproar about the issue about that perhaps MS will think up a fix. I long for simple boolean.

Indexing can be and should be configured to include more than the Default folders. If it fails to find things then the Index can be rebuilt, which might be worth a try. It shouldn't turn itself off, not under normal circumstances anyway.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Indexing Options\ Advanced\Rebuild

I am not that familiar with "blob files in Paradox".

I've done that. It's limited none the less. I am going to try your suggestion above. Thanks again.
