What causes files to remain open under shared folders?

A users an access a shared folder, and a file within the folder. They close out of the file. Later they try to get back in and they are not able to. After checking the Shared folders and the openfiles I noticed that the same file is listed more then once. I close the files and user is able to access.

Files/folder being open causes them to remain open under shared folders!

Ash.

What time of files are we talking about here? Are the users correctly closing them?

Ash.

When I mean the file is listed more then once I am referring to the file that the user was listed as having open but actually does not. They close the file by exiting out of the file under Excel, Word, etc...

Okay, is this occuring to just one workstation or user? Or everywhere? What OS & service packs are you running on the clients?

Ash.

It occurs to various users. OS is Windows XP and 2000 connecting to a Windows 2000 pro server with service pack 2.

Clients with XP are service Pack 1 and clients on Windows 2000 are service pack 3.

The other thing to consider if its also affecting the w2k desktops is virus protection & viruses. Make sure you are uptodate with both defs & versions, also look on the vendors support sites for any issues file locking issues.

Thank you... The support site you sent me too describes the problems the client is indicating on thier side. I will check the client event log to confirm.
