Open Close seperate windows

i've got a website that has a link to open a new window. This new window doesn't have any of the toolbars on it. What i want to do is have a link on this new window that will close that window and open the link on the main page. Is there any way of doing this.

I'm still a bit confused can you tell us where there is an example of this because i can't seem to get it working, as it is only part of the script.
