Hi,
Is it possible to browse through(cat, awk etc) a text file in FTP mode????

Please help.
Thanks,
Suhaimi

No. FTP is for transferring files. Get the file, then cat it.

hi suhaimi,
would it help to take a directory listing of the remote system into a temporary file and read that to decide which files to pull over?
alternatively you could of course, use remsh with awk or cat and send the output to pg on the local machine, then save it to a local file i.e.

remsh <remote_servername> /usr/sbin/cat <remote_filename> | pg
s /var/tmp/<local_filename>

or redirect the output to another local file.

you may have already solved it so i won't make any more suggestions unless you've more queries.
