open browser window onload BUT just the once!

I want to put a pop up window on a page with the onload behaviour but I would like it to pop up only of the first visit within a session ie if the user goes back to page again it won't annoyingly pop up as he/she has already seen it. Is there any code to do this please?

assign a session variable as visited and then check if it is there. If it is dont display the popup if it isnt then go ahead.
