I have a user who received an Access file with a .mde extension and we cant open it. I do believe Access uses an extension of .mdb. I have tried to change the extension to .mbd, but no luck. We use Office 2000. Could this Access file been created in Access 2003? Are they compatable? Any suggestions as to why we cant open this file?

A .mde file should never come alone but inside an installation procedure with the relevant access Run time.

Hope This Helps, PH.

You should be able to open an MDE that was created from an Access 2000 formatted file. I create these and send them to other company factories all over the USA.

What do you mean by "cant open it"? Check with the source of the file. The MDE may have been created with Access security enabled.

Well when I go to click on the access file it wont open. I get, "The database is in an unrecognized format". If it were created with Access security enable, how to change it. I look at the file icon and it does show a little lock on it.

Its telling me it may have been created with a later version and to upgrade to a current one. Is there a way around this?

Ask the sender for the access version of the mde.
