We recently upgraded to Office 2007.

A user needed to open an old file they use from time to time from Lotus 1-2-3.

It was in a wk4 format.

I tried to open it, but it wouldn't. I looked on Microsofts site and could not find an add-in that would allow you to open the file in 2007. I read on a Developer Blog that they removed support for it.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to open it?

I did have a system running with office 2000, so I was able to open the file with that and save it as an excel file, so I do not need any work-arounds.

I need a permanent solution as I can see this cropping up in the future as he have Lotus Notes for our e-mail and database servers. I can see this coming up again. We will not always have a device with office 2000 on it as my Terminal Server Farm is bing upgraded this summer and will have 2007 on when the upgrade is done.

Unfortunately, the permanent solution is to keep the old system running as long as you can. There is no Lotus support in Office 2007.

I don't think anyone has yet tried to see if they can add the WK4 DWORD in the registry. I for sure don't want to try it.

The more I read, the more I want to avoid 2007 for as long as possible. I played with the beta, and hated it. I wrote a white paper for our organization recommending we do not "upgrade". Beside the fact that it would cost us $10 million bucks.

However, this thread has made me think I need to explore more deeply the legacy impact. We could be seriously up the creek if we do not ensure really old (archived) files are re-archived in plain-jane readable format.

Yikes.
