I found out how to change the opacity of a background via thread215-961224 but the trouble I have is that this applies the opacity changes to the text also? Is there a way to change the opacity of JUST the background-color?

No. You'd have to have the background on a child element and set the opacity on that.

Also remember that once you set opacity on any element, you cannot remove it for any child elements of that initial element.
