Opacity and line with the pencil tool

I had been using a previous version of illustrator. In the previous version, illustrator 10 I believe, I was able to set the opacity before drawing a line with the pencil tool, and the subsequent lines draw retained that opcacity. In this manner I could sketch with Illustrator as if using a hard lead pencil. Very cool. However I have upgraded and now find it impossible to draw in such a manner with the pencil tool. It seems that every new line drawn is automatically set to 100 percent opacity. Of course I can select those lines and change their opacity but that is beside the point. I want every new line to have that transparent quality. Is this no longer possible with the creative suite versions of Illustrator?

...have you tried the appearance palette? Try turning 'new art maintains appearance' off, either from the flyout menu or via the icon at the bottom left of the palette...

...you can also set this as a default if you wish by launching illustrator, turning it off, quit illustator and relaunch...

A thousand 'thankyou's and a shower of praise!
