another series of TrueVector errors has shown up in Event Viewer, and all ZA's program permissions have gone away (yet again).

Zone Labs says that this is no big deal -- reboot in safe mode, delete c:\winnt\internet logs\*.* and reboot normally and reset permissions (unless you have ver 4.x and have backed up your configuration).

Now, it seems to me this is at best a too-frequently occuring inconvenience and flaw in programming, and at worst a potential hole into my box from the outside.

has anyone experienced problems with this, and further, does anyone have suggestions on how to keep this from happening repeatedly? Zone Alarm's technical support has been much less than helpful in this area.

thanks,

You didn't mention with which OS this problem is occurring.

I have had a lot of problems with certain versions of ZA Pro on my Win2K Pro setup (no problems with my Win98SE or WinXP Pro setups). For example, ZAP v4.0.146.029 has not produced these problems on Win2K Pro, but ZAP v3.0.134 did produce the problems, similar to what you described. I have not yet installed ZAP v4.5.530.0.0 on Win2K Pro or WinXP Pro, but will do so as soon as I make a drive image of each for restoration purposes in the event of problems. I have had no problems with ZAP v4.5.530.0.0 on my Win98SE setup.

It is worth the time and disk space to archive all of the older ZAP versions, so that you have a good working copy of each in case you need to re-install the problem free firewall version.

As far as making a backup of all of your settings, did you export/backup your ZA security settings (as an .xml file)so as to have a quick re-install method while trouble-shooting this problem?

§° Every setup and system is different, unless it has been cloned. Problems, as well as solutons to those problems will often be unique to that system and may not apply to others. °§
