With regards to pcs that are connected to the works network, whereby the users are really only ever logging off their machines and very rarely restarting them, how much of a difference does logging off make to freeing up resorces. Presuming just about all services should be freed up?Been some discussions on whether to get users to start their machines each night or to just log off?

Actually, services will not be freed with a logoff in most cases (you have to go through and see what logon authority they are using in each instance).

The state of Fast User Switching makes a difference.

The status of programs such as Antivirus and firewall makes a difference.

You could use Task Manager just prior to a logoff, and just after a new logon to measure this. (Or Process Explorer, freeware: )

XP is fairly efficient about memory management, so my own personal guess is that you are fine with the practices you are following. I do not see the need for any extraordinary "cleanup" steps with your current practice.

If concerned, create a shortcut on the desktop to do a reboot rather than a logoff at end of shift. Shutdown.exe -r
