My hard drive crashed and I am replacing it with Western Digital Sata drive. After I installed the drive and rebooted the machine, the new drive is being detected on channel 3 instead of channel 0. My machine is a HP Pavilion a1540n.

HP documentation said that if it is not detected on Channel 0, then the either the drive is defective or not installed correctly. Both HP and WD docs said that it is not necessary to change the jumper setting on drive.

Anyone has any Idea what might be the problem.

Thanks

Are there any other drives/devices connected? Things like card readers and USB drives can steal the "0" and later the "C:" drive. Disconnect any external or internal storage devices prior to loading Windows, except the optical & floppy drive. Go ahead and load Windows, make sure it is installing to "C:".

It's really not critical where the BIOS sees the drive, especially with SATA, the bus width is the same for all ports.
