Immediately after installing windows 2000 professional OS and installing USRobotics 5660a modem to connect to my ISP (installed this from their provided CD) I started getting this error reminder that my registry is corrupted and need patch to fix. I reinstalled windows2000 and still get it using same dial-up modem and ISP.

Here is the surprise, my son has a wireless cable ISP, when we use it, There is no error whatsoever popping up at all reminding registry problems. I have installed/ran zone alarm(free),ad-aware, spybot-SD, and updated to the latest windows 2000 profesional windows update. Still getting these pop-ups error messages. Here are most of them showing up after every ok response:(i've seen 7 after 15 min break)
reg-patch.com ...this asked for $19.95 to fix errors
after visiting that website.
winregfix32.com, fixyourreg.com, fixregistryerrors.com,
fixregnow.com, regmaster.com.
And this one, so far is not on registry->swipespy.com
saying privacy is in danger, browser
infected with spyware, adware, and
thiefware.

I have ran also online scan from trendmicro/housecall virus scan and has not detected virus or even TROJANS. What will I do to remove these unwanted pop-ups.
I only get this when connected to dial up modem. My son is moving out soon, and we found, it doesnt get it when using his cable ISP road runner internet connections. Also seems like problem associated/connected to the Connection Manager program cmmn32.exe used when using dial up modem.

I would appreciate if anyone knows anything how to fix this problem or ideas what to do to eliminate it. I'm using 500mhz celeron processor. My AVG antivirus program doesnt detect anything on it.

1.) wrong forum... this isn't a hardware fault...

2.)Download the MS AntiVirus program ( run it in safemode... clear all TEMP files from the system...

3.) Download EWIDO ( let it run a full system scan...

4.) this is not a Viral problem either, so the AVG will not find or fix it...

5.) use another browser, instead of IE, like FireFox... or clamp down your IE security settings, turn off ActiveX, JavaScript and scripting...

6.) if you are not running a Firewall, I suggest you do... like Kerio or ZoneAlarm (real good for beginners)...

hi Ben,
:2) I guess u mean MS(microsoft) Anti Spyware, as i never heard, but look it up anyway and didnt find any antivirus by MS. I googled it..nothing showed up.

:3) I went to Ewido.net and ran their full system scan..nope nothing found..except for 1 spyware that my Ad-aware program also found.. I have it removed, but problem is still there.

:5) hehe I wish i can switch to firefox, but for now would like to stay with what i got, learning is another thing. BTW
how do u turn off active x, javaScript & scripting. Only thing i can find in Tools/internet options/microsoft VM(java logging enabled, java console enabled, and JitCompiler for VM. Where is that at?

:6) I do have a firewall from zone alarm,,i installed it thinking it might block those pop-ups but problem is still ongoing. Getting them on top of one another almost every minute another pop-up recommending to go those websites to fix registry corruption.

I didnt say on my posting that i loaded windows2000 on an old pc also(233mhz AMD k6), using same modem & ISP in NTFS format and it also get same pop-up errors. ON this faster machine(500 mhz pentium 2 class)I formatted the drive FAT32 before installing windows 2000 OS.I did this 2 times i.e.,. Nevertheless, gets the same pop-up errorss soon as i connect to the internet via same modem and dial up ISP?

Wonder if anyone has encountered same kind of problem?

Yeah, sorry, I did mean MS AntiSpyware, I type slower than I can think...

turning off ActiveX, JavaScript and Scripting is done under the InternetOptions (either through IE or through the Control Panel), Tab Security and Extended... then it will give you the options just look for them... Warning: ActiveX and JavaScript is used by alot of webpages, Like MS own for the Updates. reenable ActiveX for that Page or add it to the Secure Websites...

ZoneAlarm will only stop PopUps that come from a Website as you surve, once this critter that you have, is active on the OS it will use IE to gain access and load the information from other websites... this basically circumvents ZA as it thinks you are accessing these sites...

Please check the following threads, especially that what PACHENEGS wrote, as that is some seriously good advice on how to fix the problem, or similiar...
thread760-1103111 and thread760-1096245

pls post back if that helped or not...

hi Freestone,
Yes I've been using that ISP for longer than 6 yrs, it's the Internet Service Provider for the School District here in Texas and now some of the other states in the east coast now, Florida is one.
I get into this problem when my old machine(k6,AMD mentioned above..was affected by lightning and damaged my modem, although it was off at the time. I guess cuz the modem is still connected to the tel. cable & i didnt have a comm surge protector. So I just purchased that US robotics modem 5660a.
So thats how I have to get my other pc sitting there for a while(2nd machine) that I ordered EBay wise that HDD of 6.4 gb.
I have that cd that they provided me via email(academicplanet.com)and I have used that so many times before when i go to other city where my ISP is available locally. It includes a load of IE-version 6 with cipher strenght of 56 bits still, but after the upgrade it's now at 128 bits cipher strenght. I will pick-up a new cd when i came by close to that ISP building, sometimes soon.
I have windows98 on my old machine..but my son provided me with windows2000 so thats when i started getting all these registry pop-ups after partitioning/formatting 2 times and installing win2000 2 times getting same errors via this modem and isp.. how about that!

Just a quick thought off the top of my head as this hasn't been mentioned elsewhere...
Have you disabled the "Messenger" service, as this sounds like it might be messenger spam. Note that this service does not relate to Windows Messenger or any other IM client.

These instructions will tell you how to do so.

BINGO, TAZUK U LEAD ME TO THE PROMISE LAND!
Actually, I'm looking into this lead, yes, I posted this same problem @ techRepublic.com, and this guy already pointed to me the MS Messenger Service. Last nite I followed his hint & with good efforts found where it's at:
Control panel/admin tools/services/messenger/properties(rt click)/start-up type: auto,manual,disable.

I have tried auto- where it was, then manual- don't get as much, and then, disable really took those pop-up messages out alright, but then what's the hitch? I guess it says alert messages from administrator in a network or Alerter services will be curtailed. And I feel like my system has been compromised(not normal :( ).So he suggested going back and reformatting and reinstalling win2000 and at the point of turning on my ISP to connect, disable messenger service so as not to allow these Messenger spam messages to plant their patch ( I'm guessing here )if there was any. Those messages if u Ignore and leave it unanswered will not propagate as it stays there and wont let the others to start the continous spam-like pop-ups, but its on top of any active windows. Can't even minimize even with Desktop icon prompt. Seems like it triggers the patch routine to endlessly go to the next. This guy said its a HOAX ,as he use Sniffer program to analyze it and there's no virus/patch inside it, just plain irritating messages, but the registry is not really corrupted or damaged as the messages claimed. By ignoring it he said it can't harm anything.

U'r lead is the correct infos on this problem, posted by Microsoft and I'm looking into it right now, explaining what I have mentioned above.
Hope I find out a sure way out of this dillemma without disabling this messenger services, or reformatting and reinstalling win2000 again to try and see if its permanently remove without disable choice(not normal).

I'll keep U'all posted!
