HI -

I'm looking for a hosted online database provider that will allow us to create a database for the tracking of warranty renewals.

We would like to be able to add a renewal date field that a week before this date a reminder email is sent out.

I have found a couple of online databases but none will allow us to set up a trigger based on a date.

We have no in-house knowledge of database design and need to be able to access it from anyware.

Any Ideas

Depends on the number of warranties you need to maintain.
In principle you can use any database for that purpose, and any online database will be available for access anywhere you have internet access. But data in itself will not send emails.

I assume you have a large database, then I'd recommend using one of the major league databases. SQL Server has Notification Services for example, which is meant for that purpose to create notifications based on some conditions.

That needn't be a problem - you just set up a job that runs every day, sending any emails that are due. Any host that allows you to use cron would be suitable.

Database choice is more a function of volume of data. If you're a small business, MySQL may be powerful enough.

Triggers by their nature are not date-based. Triggers in all databases occur only when data is inserted, deleted or updated. What you generally want if you want to take some action based on a date is a scheduled job. These are scheduled to run at specific dates and times (such as daily at 11:00 pm or every Monday at 1:00 am) and thus the actions can be date-based.

I think that's what s/he meant: the online databases he found won't allow him to schedule jobs. (Misuse of terminology.)
