As a New Orleans Hornets fan, I was interested in the "other side" regarding the current NBA quarter-final series between the Dallas Mavericks and the Hornets. So I Googled "Dallas Morning News, and the first thing I get is a Google sponsored ad:

That reminds me of an interview with Karl Malone I heard years ago, where he said something about being proud to play for the "City of Utah.

I still think "Utah Jazz" just doesn't fly. The Jazz, after all, started off in New Orleans; the owners just moved to cut down on their commute time.

The same can be said about the LA Lakers...they were originally the Minnesota Lakers. Maybe they should change their name to the LA Smog.

Yes, we Jazz fans recall with fondness Karl's "artik-uh-larity". One of our favourite Karl quotes was:

It's days that it ain't worth waking up as Karl Malone.

I used to have a friend named Leigh. She was dating a guy with the last name Malone.

A bunch of us were secretly rooting for them to get married just so her name would be

Le' 'em alone!

Okay, but if you're going to go there, then the reference to the the team name "Hornets" (formerly the Charlotte, NC basketball team) goes all the way back to the Revolutionary War when British General Charles Cornwallis wrote to the King of England in his battle report from the Carolinas that "this place is like fighting in a hornet's nest."

NBA teams tend not to change nicknames when they move from city to city. The Warriors originated in Philadelphia, and now they are the Golden State Warriors, in Oakland, California. They'd never take a name like that if they were an expansion team there today.

More than that, I think it's an insult to the art form that is jazz music. Jazz was born on the streets of the Southern US, allowing a bunch of Midwesterners to usurp the name for commerce's sake is shallow and shows zero creativity and pride in their region. In their defense, I can't imagine any other names except maybe the "Utah Buttes"...but I'm sure if I lived there I could find numerous names that would evoke local pride.

This discussion reminds me of a comedy routine, I can't remember the author, but he had Piston pants, Piston shoes, and Piston just about everything else...[smile]

Utah is hardly Midwestern.

Got me there, traingamer. Change that to read "Westerners" or "Mountaineers"...but you get my point.

I've never bothered to review the actual US census regions until now. There is an "East North Central" region of the "Midwest".

Incidentally, the nickname of the Detroit NBA team has nothing directly to do with the automobile industry of said city. They started out in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where the first owner of the team (Fred Zollner) also owned a piston factory.

And the Piston comedian is Tim Cavanagh. You can find the Piston Song on the Bob & Tom Web site.
