one winXP machine on our network acting strange.

Our companies IS guy left a few weeks ago, and we do appear to be getting a new one soon, so I am functioning as the IS person until then.

I have a strange problem.

THE SETUP:
a win2K network, with win2K and winXPPro clients. Users are handled by the Domain. We have active directory.

THE ISSUE:
Recently, in the last week or so, I have been having issues with *ONE* of the winXPPro client machines. When I log into the machine with my Domain Account, I can browse the internet without issue.

But when I try to browse the company's network shares, I get a Domain Login popup window. This popup *WILL NOT* accept my Domain Login. This Domain Login popup will accept other logins (such as administrator or another user's). Before last week, I never use to get the domain login popup when browsing the company's network shares at all.

Becuase our Printers are attached to the network, I also cannot print from this machine. (at least until I log into a network share as another user).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
When attempting to logging into the machine with another Domain User account (not administrator), I was not allowed to login in at all. Instead I recieved a popup message saying "The System could not log you in becuase the Domain foo is not available." (where foo is my domain name).

I do not see this popup message during logon for myself, or the Administrator Account.

SUMMARY:
This problem is localized to the one winXPPro machine. I do not have this problem when I log into any other machine on the network, including the other winXPPro machines.

Just kidding... Um you maight want to try deleting and reconfiguring the user account. Perhaps the person at that computer was playing around...sorry i cant be of more help, I'm a win98 guy...

I don't know much about this topic, but I will try to help.

I recently changed my machine logon password, and that was different than my password that I used for those network shares. After I changed my password on my machine, I was able to log onto those network shares no problem.

Also, I have noticed that if I have the same IP address as someone else, I will have internet capability but not be able to connect to network shares.

My suggestion would be to rejoin the machine to the domain. It sounds like the machine's membership has gotten corrupter in some form. As you can log on and work from the other computers using your account with no problem, I would look at this machines account.
Right click My Computer, select Properties, then Computer Name. Select Join Workgroup, enter a name, then reboot.
Repeat process, replacing the workgroup part with the correct name of your domain. Make sure you use the Domain Admin account or one with the permission to join the domain. Best of luck. MCSE, A+

Slap in the CD, select the update install and end your worries in 47 minutes.. Just clear out the "My Documents" first. Or lose it. If you want to soldier on for another hour then right click network settings. List propeties and make sure that obscure check boxes are on/off the same as the other machines' auto settings. E.g. Properties of Internet Protocol TCP/IP... NetBios on default, DNS, WINS, yadayada

You were both on the right track. tha machine was indeed having issues joining the domain.

Unfortunately, after unjoining the domain, and attempting to clear the the machine af anything related to the network (ipconfig /flushdns , ntbstat -r -R -RR) when I tried to rejoin the domain an error saying that the domain controller for the domain could not be found. (even stranger, the help message for that error said it was able to locate 2 domain controllers for the domain. weirdness)

Eventually, the only solution that worked was to in fact wipe the machine and start from scratch. oh well.
