I've been using a PC running Win2K at home, and I've recently bought an Apple Mac running OSX 10.4.4. The two of them are now connected via a crossover ethernet cable.

After much fumbling around, I can now ping both IP addresses from the PC, but the Mac can only see its own IP address. I'm completely new to this, so I'm probably missing something very obvious, but could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

Well, ping is not 100% reliable. It can be blocked, or a system can be configured not to respond, etc. Try installing a little free ftp server or web server or something on the w2k box, and then connect to that from the Apple machine.

Disable your XP firewall if you want to get the XP box to respond to a ping. ICMP reply is blocked by XP's internal firewall.

This isn't a good practice for operation, but it acceptable for a simple test.
