One-to-Many relationship affecting "n"

I am running a report which features a summary column (Total # of appointments the patient has had). I have grouped the account number field. This sum formula is set up like this:

sum ({Patient_appts}, {Patient_AccntNumb})

I am adding a grand total based on COUNT of account numbers and my "n" is really augmented. Presumably the count is reflecting the number of encounter dates rather than the number of patients in the report. How do I get my report to show an accurate population based on number of patients? (Grouping on the patient name created the same junky data).
Thanks

Have you tried changing your "Count" to a "DistinctCount"? Mike
