I have a color laserjet 3800 with the yellow missing. I have been able to narrow it down to the yellow cartridge slot. The cartridge is brand new and will work in another slot without problem. Error 54.0c.03 and 54.0f.03 errors show up in the event log report. Have googled these errors without much luck. Also I have checked the HP service manual, and it really isn't much help. Tried a DC controller, but to no avail. Any other ideas out there? I am at a loss. Thanks.

54.0c03 means CPR Sensor out of range - That is the Color Plane Registration that is out of range -> printer is out of calibration. Without the yellow toner recognized the printer is unable to calibrate and print the color that is missing in this case yellow.

From the printers menu go to -> Configure Device -> Print Quality and perform a couple of Full Calibrations to see if the colors align up again or not.

If the issue is not resolved you probably need to replace the cartridge lock kit for the yellow toner.

Thanks for the reply. I have already run the full calibration and nothing changed. Did replace the cartridge lock kit in another printer in the same office, so that was one of the first things I checked. The locks look ok and they are the white ones. I have seen the cpr sensor out of range message, but can't seem to find that sensor, or how to calibrate it. I've also read somewhere that the cpr sensor could be bad or needs cleaning, however, I can't locate it in the manual.

This is sometimes a red herring. It is reporting a past error, or generating a current fault that is not related to the problem. Try upgrading the firmware first.
CPR error is beause of a toner not being recognized, so it is not the sensor that is faulty.
The toner sensor PCB may be faulty.
This unit is made very strangely, in that it is fragile, and must be handled very carefully. Why HP made this monster is beyond me.

Is it possible the yellow laser is out?

Not likely. This printer has 2 lasers. Each one writes to two of the colors. The top Laser writes to both the Black and the Yellow.

When you close the door is the protective drum flap (cover) on the yellow cartridge opening? What happens if another color is in that slot?

Thanks for the reply. The drum door did open, and if another color cartridge was put in this slot, it would not print that color. It seems to be something relating to that cartridge position. The machine is destined for the scrap heap.

That's just too bad...
I bet it's the toner engagement that is out of sync.
There is good documentation available on how to fix this (check and adjust the gears) and even a public (large) video here -> ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software8/COL17123/lj-45472-1/tonerlock3.wmv
