I have a new MSI (VIA KT266A Chipset) with a VIA onboard LAN. the Link and activity lights come on while the computer is booting, but after the windows 98 splash screen appears, they go off and the network will not work. Windows still recognizes that the card is present in the system, but the LAN refuses to come back on. in fact, i have to shut off the computer and turn off the power supply switch to even get the lan lights to come back on during boot up. I've had this problem with a few other boards, some MSI and one Biostar. Any Suggestions?

Make sure you have the lan enabled in the bios and have the latest/correct drivers from MSI. (go to the website for the drivers, don't rely on the ones that came with the board.)
