On rollover in movie clip instances?

In the flash5 help, it says you can assign actions to movie clip instances; yet, when I create a movie clip, and go into the edit mode, it will not let me assign actions to any instance of the clip unless I convert that instance into a button. This is extremely painful, as i'm trying to make it so that if you click on the movie clip any time during its playing (shape tweening, the instances in the movie clip are ungrouped) it will jump to a different frame in the movie clip dependent on the frame clicked. That actionscripting i know how to do...flash5 just won't let me add the on press action (or any other on mouse action, for that matter).

Am I doing something wrong?

try putting a button inside the mc or on top of it and targeting the mc from the button
