Hi guys,

When I first got my switches and routers I couldn't help but notice that the switches have no on/off switch while the routes do. I kinda ignored it at first but now i am curious what the logic behind? What techniques do you use to power cycle these things without yanking a cable?

log into the switch and do a reload command from the priv exec mode OR yank the cord.... hey if you dont wanna yank the cord.. put it on a surge protector with an on/off switch.... =)

There are also a plethora of remote power devices (search switched PDU) that will allow you to power your equipment via an SSL/TLS secured web interface.. Just a thought.. Normally, switches are rarely powered down though!

bongonetworker,

I plug all my switches into those under monitor control power surge devices - they have 4 or 5 switches and 1 master. I lable each control and then I can turn on or off a switch without having to reach behind it on the rack. It also allows me to control each individual switch.

Triplite makes them and they run about $25 at Amazon.

You can see some pictures of this and my rack here -
