just create your backup to disk and offload the file to a service
For the sake of bandwidth conservation, you could write a small script to backup only those files which have been updated since the last full backup.
Do a full backup on say a Sunday, and only incrementals in the interim.
It's possible that there are VMS agents for some of the OLBS, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
If you have multiple Vaxen, on different sites, then your own backup may be the biscuit, but you don't have the luxury of beating anyone up if it fails.
Have you checked out the OpenVMS Data Protection software?

More specificity would be helpful. Is the question: Can you run BACKUPs while the system is running? [Within limits, the answer is: YES]. Or is the question about one of the automated backup solutions, in which case the answer is "depends".
